Racing powerhouse Darley paid $10 million for the stallion prospect after it won the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington last November. After sharing the $302,000 first prize, the massive offer came from Sheikh Mohammed who told the owners they could continue to race and collect the prizemoney in its current and last campaign before Brazen Beau heads to stud at Darley’s Northwood Park in Victoria in spring.
The colt resumes in tomorrow’s Black Caviar Lightning at Flemington and the Chris Waller-trained horse is considered the best outsider in the field of six to knock off Lankan Rupee or the unbeaten Deep Field. Already pencilled into represent Australia at Royal Ascot, Deep Field is also being wooed to the UK as part of the global sprint series which kicks off in the Lightning Stakes and goes to seven countries as connections chase a $1 million bonus.
Royal Ascot’s Nick Smith had talks with trainer John Hawkes in Sydney earlier this week and said the training team is keen to travel Deep Field to the UK where a win during the carnival would bolster his worth and reputation as a stallion. Ontrack Thoroughbreds’ Grant Morgan said there had been a lot of good luck stories associated with Brazen Beau’s owners who had brought shares after the yearling was advertised.
“It’s been life changing for a lot of the owners,” Morgan said. “It’s been a massive ride for them.” Morgan said.
The owners were from four states in Australia and there was also a couple from overseas, and they were all hooked on racing for life and reinvested some of their windfall from Brazen Beau into another horse. Jockey Craig Williams admits that the more fancied Lankan Rupee, and Deep Field, who he said went like a rocket in a trial at Flemington last week, would be hard to beat. But he warned that he’d be stalking on Brazen Beau.
“It’s a real exciting race to have last year’s impressive Coolmore winner coming down the straight in the Lightning,” Williams said. “It’s going to be an intriguing race.” “I’m on the horse that’s going to be out the back who is going to be stalking.”
Williams is aware of the pace that is going to established by the front runners but says Brazen Beau is a very good chaser.
