IMG_4423Lang Brothers Racing was created early in 2013 , when six mates purchased a small share in a little brown horse by I Am Invincible. Little could they know the horse would take them half way round the world where they would rub shoulders with royalty.

The horse was of course Brazen Beau and that incredible journey has now manifested into a full blown passion and love of the thoroughbred.

Lang Brothers Racing now shares the wonderful experience of racing a horse with a growing army of devoted owners, the stable growing year on year , as we continue to search for the next champion.

My love of racing started innocently enough, watching the Melbourne Cup on TV from a young age. As I grew older, I loved nothing more than spending a day at the track with my mates, driven by the growing love of the thoroughbred.

In early 2001, together with a few mates, I bought into my first racehorse. Unfortunately she wasn’t very good, but the fire had been well and truly lit. I backed up again in 2007, but again it proved fruitless, however the quest to find that elusive winner remained. Little did I know, my next horse would turn out to be gun sprinter Brazen Beau and he would take us half way round the world on an unbelievable ride.

Apart from his amazing results on the track, he also enabled us to expand our ownership base and eventually move into the breeding game. Through Lang Brothers Racing we now own shares in over 10 horses and two broodmares. Owning racehorses is one thing, but something I am now extremely passionate about is breeding. I really enjoy looking into pedigrees, trying to match mares with stallions, and the journey to the sales ring , hopefully one day selling a Group One champion of my own.

The joy and excitement you get watching one of your horses run is hard to explain. It’s not simply all about the big carnivals either. In fact, one of the most enjoyable days at the track over the past year wasn’t in the glitz and glamour of Royal Ascot or Flemington. Instead, it was at a non-tab meeting at Young, when a four-year-old broodmare we purchased won her maiden by three lengths. That is what racing is all about. It doesn’t matter where you are running; it’s always a great day out and something everyone can enjoy.

To me, that is what Lang Brothers Racing is all about – having fun and enjoying the thrills of owning a racehorse. It is hard to know everything there is to know when buying a share in a horse. Our aim is to introduce people to the world of thoroughbred racing, regardless of their budget, and educate where possible.

Our main aim is to make owners feel part of a wider team and feel part of the wider racehorse owners’ community.

BIO

My first real interaction with racing (or perhaps punting) came courtesy of my Grandfather. I remember going to my grandparents house after school and seeing the daily newspaper covered with black pen marks sitting on the kitchen table. Turns out I had stumbled across the punters bible – otherwise known as the trusty form guide. Over the next few years my interest in racing would continue to grow, to the point where . he would eventually hide the paper from me.

My grandparents were both members of the local Fisherman’s Club who ran a weekly punters club . It wasn’t long before Grandma entrusted her turn to me. I took great delight in turning the $40 pot into much more, proving to my grandfather I too could find a winner.

After backpacking through Europe in my early 20’s I returned to Australia not really sure what career path to take. My best mate at the time had recently left his job and he suggested we complete a horse management course through TAFE. Not sure if this was just a vain attempt to improve our punting expertise, or simply an opportunity to continue the holiday lifestyle, this course introduced us to the thoroughbred from a whole new angle.

We learnt to saddle and strap horses, even how to muck out boxes. It didn’t hurt getting the stable whispers on the punt either – and the love affair with thoroughbreds continued to blossom.

This course also unearthed a hidden talent for journalism.

So at the age of 26, I packed up the car and headed to Charles Sturt Univesity in Bathurst to study print journalism. The four years I spent at CSU were certainly enjoyable (mainly outside the classroom) and eventually led to me heading across the ditch to work for a small newspaper on the South Island of New Zealand

I only lasted six months, no doubt due to a combination of freezing cold temperatures and homesickness. But I got to cover local horse racing, trots and of course rugby.

Returning to Australia, I began working in the Insurance industry and have forged a successful career at both TAL and MLC.

My passion for racing has remained and I have been lucky enough to achieve my dream of owning racehorses.

Stu and I were extremely fortunate to ride the Brazen Beau rollercoaster and made it all the way to Royal Ascot. More importantly, we were able to take many more on the journey through the deeds of several horses since , sharing the joy of ownership with many different owners.

We take great pride in bringing new people into racing and recently purchased a farm in Kingsvale to continue evolving our racing dreams

The future looks promising, as we continue to focus on breeding, however the punt will always hold a special place in my heart.
